Apple hit with $5.7 billion in damages over haptic patents
Haptics tech company Taction sued Apple in 2021, alleging it infringed two of its patents. Now a federal jury in San Diego has awarded Taction over $5.7 billion in damages. According to CNBC, "The lawsuit centered around U.S. Patent Nos. 10,659,885 and 10,820,117, which both involve vibration-based, tactile transducer technology that helps users feel a […]Terrence O’Brien

Decap is the man behind the drums behind your favorite song
I don't think I'm going to hurt anyone's feelings by pointing out that Decap doesn't have the name recognition of Kendrick Lamar, Olivia Rodrigo, or Charli XCX. But his fingerprints are all over tracks from them, as well as many other artists, including Freddie Gibbs, Bad Bunny, Mac Miller, BTS, and even Ludwig Göransson's score […]Terrence O’Brien

Kids turned the comment section of an NPR podcast into a group chat
Middle schoolers, likely blocked from other apps and social networks, apparently turned the Spotify comment section under an episode of NPR's Wild Card into an impromptu group chat. In a new episode of This American Life, host Ira Glass digs into how the kids landed there and why. But it mostly boils down to kids […]Terrence O’Brien

OpenAI pauses training of its ‘most capable models’
As reports of OpenAI's models breaking containment, hacking sites, and generally getting out of control pile up, the company has made the decision to pause training of its most powerful models. The decision was made after a model being tested within a sandbox exploited a loophole to gain internet access. The incident happened on September […]Terrence O’Brien

Control Resonant is a great game — it’s even better when you read everything
In Control Resonant, the entire world is at stake. But that didn't stop the diligent employees of the Federal Bureau of Control from filing reams of paperwork, and it didn't stop me from reading everything I could find, either. Reading is often optional in Resonant, but it's where some of the game's best details - […]Kallie Plagge

Pokémon card resellers have turned collecting into an online blood sport
Earlier this month, Pokémon card content creator Natalie Roush posted a video to her YouTube and Instagram pages that enraged the larger collection community. In the now-deleted video, Roush shows off two premium boxes of cards that had not yet been officially released, and implores viewers not to be mad. But they were; other creators […]Charles Pulliam-Moore

Can ‘eSUV’ e-bikes really go from trail to town?
Have you ever wanted an electric bike that easily transitions from the drudgery of urban asphalt to adventures in gravel and dirt? That's what a subclass of so-called "electric SUV" (eSUV) e-bikes claims to do, with their wide, all-terrain tires and front and rear suspension, plus practical accessories like fenders and racks. Thinking in Systems, Shipping in Loops
AI has removed the typing from software engineering & left the system design. DHH told Rails World that writing code by hand is no longer economically productive ; Artemis engineers merged 16 pull requests per day by August, & Lauren Tan ships 2,000 a month. The craft of fitting code together by hand is over ; what remains is designing the loop that decides whether the output is right. The Most Important Market in AI is the Middle
AI prices are collapsing, but the competition is not at the frontier. The most capable model, Fable 5.1, commanded only 3.7% of gateway spending in its first twelve days. Demand is a normal distribution with a fat middle, & as intelligence per dollar explodes the tokens may shift to commodity. Whether that ha

wobuhuicode

Enterprise AI's real risk isn't autonomous agents. It's the complexity between them.
Presented by Gravitee Agent complexity is the insidious shadow lurking inside enterprises right now that needs a light shone on it. That’s because enterprises don't deploy a single agent and watch it run, they deploy fleets, each one calling APIs, calling other agents, reaching into applications that were never built with a machine decision-maker in mind. That's the failure mode that should keep you up at night: a windy, complicated system nobody can see clearly enough to govern. But why do thin

When agents act on their own, governance has to live in the data layer
Presented by EDB As enterprises give AI agents more autonomy — the ability to plan, decide, and act across systems without a human approving each step — a hard question moves to the center of every architecture review: When an agent tries to complete an action that it was never authorized to do, what actually stops it? These are your agents, running on your models, touching your data in your infrastructure — and the responsibility for what they do sits with you. That responsibility can’t be met
